Climbing~Taking Action~For Women in Congo

Climb Take Action~7 Summits Challenge is dedicated to empowering women in war-torn Democratic Republic of Congo by climbing to raise funds and awareness to their suffering. The initiative was founded by Georgina Miranda with the goal of climbing both versions of the 7 summits (highest peak on each continent) and taking action to bring awareness and relief to these fellow women. These climbs are for them! The journey is well underway having reached Europe's highest peak, Mt. Elbrus 5642 m (Russia) on July 22nd, Australia's highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, on December 30, 2008, Africa's hightest peak, Mt. Kilimanjaro 5895 m (Tanzania) on July 16, 2009, Aconcagua 6962 m (Argentina) on January 10, 2010, and Denali 6195 m (Alaska) on June 1st! The quest to empower others is on its way and we hope you will support our efforts! Every little bit counts and has a tremendous impact in the lives of these women and children. Next is Everest Spring 2011!

It is hard for any of us Westerners to imagine surviving some of the abuse and neglect these women and children have had to endure and continue to suffer through. We can do something to help them. I know I am amazed and inspired by thier stregnth and feel the need to help them in any way I can.

Climbing to Empower Others

Representing more than 80% the world’s refugees, women and children suffer most in emergencies, yet they hold the key to a healthy, peaceful future because of their resilience and determination.  The Democratic Republic of Congo has suffered more than a decade of civil war that has left millions dead and even greater numbers homeless.  None have suffered more than the women and children.

Tens of thousands of women have been neglected, murdered, abducted, brutally raped, tortured, and overall forgotten. Congo Wars have claimed more lives than any conflict since the end of World War II, yet the crisis has received little attention outside of central Africa. With Mt. Elbrus, Mount Kosciuszko, Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Aconcagua and Mt. McKinley accomplished, help us in our efforts to raise support and awareness that will that will bring the physical, emotional, and financial resources necessary to help women in Congo empower themselves.

100% of all proceeds will directly support U.S. based global humanitarian aid organization, International Medical Corps' (IMC), improve the health and well-being of thousands of women and children affected by war and chronic poverty in Congo.   All donations are tax deductible.

International Medical Corps provides life-saving services for displaced women and children in the DRC  including: emergency medical treatment and physician training, counseling to help heal deep psychological wounds, and economic opportunities to help promote self-sufficiency.

International Medical Corps also teaches new mothers feeding practices, provides immunizations, monitors growth, and prevents and treat the three big child-killers – acute respiratory infections, malaria and diarrhea.

All 2008 funds raised have been utilized to support  a new reproductive health 'Center of Excellence' in South Kivu, Congo run by IMC. This new center will help lower the burden of the only hospital in all of Congo that treats Fistula repair cases and improve the care for victims of sexual violence. Read more on my blog.

From Relief to Self-Reliance, International Medical Corps is empowering women to rebuild their lives and create a brighter future for their children.

Some of the world’s worst acts against humanity have taken place here, especially against women and children. Peace, change, and stability can only come to these regions with a vested interest from the global community.
